Need clarity on registering and residents permits upon arrival

Hi,

I am a Canadian arriving early January with a class D visa which I understand allows me to work in Switzerland for my two year contract. When I picked up the visa from the consulate in Canada, he mentioned something about obtaining a resident's permit when I get to Switzerland...but I haven't been able to find information for non-EU/EFTA nationals on the FOM website. Can someone point me to the right information online?

Also, from poking around old threads here, it looks like I need this permit BEFORE I start my job…how fast is the permit processed? I didn't realize this was something linked to my ability to work and so I may need to ask for my contract to be rewritten if my start date has to be after my resident's permit is approved.

Finally, my list of things to do right away upon arriving includes: get Swiss health insurance, open a bank account, get a cell phone and find an apartment. Do all of these require me to have a resident's permit? Does some of this stuff need to be done before applying for a permit? Just trying to figure out the order of things. And please let me know if I'm overlooking any important things regarding legally working/living in Switzerland!

Many thanks! This seems a bit confusing at the moment!
