Hello all, I'm new to this site so apologies if I've posted to the wrong forum. I'm hoping to find a master of the frequent flyer point system, particularly with experience flying through Canada as I'm a noobie to all this.
My wife just started a two-year position in Switzerland so starting next month I'll be travelling Vancouver-CH two to three times a year. I have family in Toronto and New York City, so I thought I might be able to incorporate some visits with these flights if the additional cost isn't too great.
I have about 120k points with the RBC Avion Infinite Visa. I discovered that American Airlines has direct JFK-ZRH flights for 20k points each way with no surcharges (an amazing deal, and I can transfer transfer my Avion points to AA via oneworld Alliance). That's the good news.
Unfortunately, it seems like I can get a good deal flying domestically across North America, or a good deal across the Atlantic, but not both. I was hoping for a direct flight out of North America to CH, but now I'm wondering about routing through major hubs in Europe (LHR, CDG, FRA, AMS) for trips not through JFK.
As my current Avion points are transferrable to oneworld Alliance members, the other airlines include Air Berlin, British Airways, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, and Finnair. I would prefer flying into CH rather than ground travel from a neighbouring country.
Many thanks in advance for any advice.
