Wochenaufenthaltes

Has anyone had any experience of living away from the 'family' home during the week. ( i.e. Renting another apartment in another canton for work purposes)
Any advise you can share ?

I live with my partner near Zurich, and have done for 7 years. This is where i pay my tax. Recently I have started working in Basel, and as the commute was extremely tiresome, i have rented a small flat in Basel. I mostly stay during the week, but I /we would also like to use the flat as a base in Basel too... To see shows, nights out with friends, etc etc. The steuerverwaltung of Basel say I cant do this. They want proof of travel away from Basel every weekend ( SBB tickets or car servicing receipts, milage etc)

This seems really excessive, and doesnt seem to make sense. I am not evading paying taxes in Switzerland. Surely I don't have to pay double tax in Canton Aargau and Canton Basel? And if I spend money in Basel in the evenings and weekend, surely they should be pleased, no??

I dont know whether to go and talk to ' them' about this (thus raising the issue but then putting myself in their radar, or keeping quiet, and just stay for the odd weekend when i feel like it? I have heard though that if they catch me staying in Basel.. I could face excessive fines!

Can anyone help me with my dilemna?
