Assault by a neighbour

Today evening , I went to have a peaceful talk with my neighbour about the noise complaint they had since last couple of days.
The argument was certainl very argumentative and suddently the neighbours partner got voilent and charged at me. I did my best to keep my cool and did not react despite of him pushing me and hitting me hard on my back.
I immeditely called the police after that and they did nothing but just gathered the story from both the parties and advised me to file an official complaint against him, which I will be able to do only tomorrow since it is a weekday.
Does anyone have an experience with a similar situation and is able to advise on what would be the next best step.
