Best jurisdiction in which to buy a new or used car?

Hi, all.

I'm thinking about relocating to Switzerland due to a job opportunity in Zurich. (I've recently posted in other fora on this site under the name NomadLawyer but English Forum made me remove the "lawyer".)

I need to buy a left-hand-side drive car. (I'll leave my right-hand-side drive here in Ireland or the UK. It's on its last legs anyway.)

Is there any benefit to trying to buy a car in a surrounding country and bring it into Switzerland or do tax penalties negate that?

If buying inside Switzerland is the best choice, is there any particular canton that is better for buying a car, be it used or new?

Incidentally, I typically try to buy a used car with low mileage from a reputable dealer. I prefer off-roaders like Land Rover Discovery, 4-Runners because I love doing road trips comfortably with the wife and kids. I also like the safety aspect of having a heavy vehicle. But most importantly, I like value for money (which, admittedly, is not great with 4x4 off-roaders), especially as I doubt I'll bring the thing back with me to the States when/if I move back, so I'm open to a sedan or whatever. Budget is up to CHF 40,000.
