I'm in touch with a startup who are looking to hire someone, maybe me, as their first employee. They can't pay what I'd expect in an established company, so I'm interested in finding out what is "normal" to be negotiated in its place. For example, if I were to take this position and take a 25% pay cut, how can I calculate the equity I'd need to compensate me for that? Are there any other common arrangements that startups and their employees use, especially anything specific to Switzerland, that the company and I could use to compensate me for the lost salary?
