Last week I saw an article on budget saving measures for public transportation in Zurich: the bright idea was to remove all rubbish bins from trams and busses. This was to save them the labour costs of emptying the bins. So now this week, sure enough, no bins to be seen. And the result? Trash all over the floor. I saw an empty hamburger carton placed nicely on a seat. Do you toss it on the floor so that you can sit down? Does that make you the litterer and subject to a fine? Apparently the Zurich public is supposed to be so well trained that they will cart off their own trash when they exit the tram. Really? How is it a cost savings when those same cleaners have to clear up rubbish from the floor instead of just emptying bins? Am I missing something here?
