I am writing on behalf of a dear friend in the UK who is suffering from acute myeloid leukaemia. Due to a particulary abnormality, she is at very high risk of relapse after chemotherapy. Her best chance for survival is a bone marrow transplant. However, she is only seeking stem-cells, a far easier and less painful process for the donor than a bone marrow transplant. The stem cells will be given to her as a transfusion and will create a new immune system for her. And you will have saved her life.
Nikki has, as she puts it, an exotic ethnic background - her mother is Anglo-Burmese and her father is Irish. When you belong to a relatively rare group like this, chances of finding a donor can be very low. Neither of her brothers are a match. She found a 9/10 matching donor however she has a lot of extremely aggressive antibodies which means that the transplant was cancelled. She needs a 10/10 match.
She is desperately seeking anyone sharing her ethnic background (Anglo-Burmese and Irish) to volunteer as a stem-cell donor. In the UK, this can be with the Anthony Nolan Trust for those aged 16-30 (http://www.anthonynolan.org/8-ways-y...n-our-register) or with Blood Transfusion Services (http://www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/bonemarrow/). In Australia, where I know there is a large Anglo-Burmese community in Perth, go to http://www.abmdr.org.au/abmdr2/page/how-join. I am just waiting to hear from her how people in the US who might be a match can register but didn`t want to wait til then to put out this call.
A note from Nikki:
"Someone somewhere out there I hope is a match for me. Please help me find this person - so I can be here to see my children grow up and to enjoy the love of companionship of all the people supporting me: my wonderful husband and children, my amazing parents and fantastic brothers and all the other members of the family, my incredible community of friends and neighbours."
Please share this with your networks if you will. Message me with or for more information.
With deep thanks,
Michelle x
