New to Switzerland and new to Zurich

Hi there,

I'm Resham. I've recently moved to Zurich with my son to join my husband who's working here and I've also very recently joined the forum. Prior to moving Zurich, I was working as a teacher of English but at the moment, I'm just looking after my toddler. We're really enjoying it here as a family. Not only are we simply overwhelmed by the sheer gorgeousness of this endlessly beautiful place but we're also blissed out by the quality of the food! I would like to meet and make a few friends while we are here so if anyone in a similar situation feels like going for a coffee, just drop me a line. When I'm not watching Toy Story, I'm usually free!
Every good wish,
Resham
:)

Moving to Zurich from Montreal, should I bring my skis, bikes?

I am supposed to be moving to Zurich this fall (waiting for Visa, but keeping my fingers crossed) and was trying to figure out if I should bother bringing my sports stuff with me, or if it is reasonably easy to buy used sporting equipment in Zurich.

I am not planning on shipping a container and if I take that stuff on the plane it will be 150CAD~140CHF per bike/skis.

My bike is a relatively old Schwinn road bike: full Ultegra, aluminum frame, carbon fork/seat post, hand built 32 spoke open pro wheels. Overall it is ~20lb race ready bike. It was ~2,000CAD when new back in 2005, now I could probably get ~600CAD for it. Would it be possible to get something similar for that kind of money in Zurich? I used to work as a bike mechanic so I know bikes and don't mind buying used.

For skis, I would be looking for an all around carving ski. Here you can get a gently used pair for ~100CAD. (which is what I am hoping to sell mine for)

Thoughts, ideas? Is there an equivalent of Canadian Kijiji web site in Switzerland where people sell their used stuff?

British National / Japanese Spouse - Relocation Question

$

Hi All,

My wife-to-be and I are seriously considering relocating to Switzerland at the end of 2014 and I wanted to ask about visa requirements.

I am a British National so I understand that I can relocate in accordance to the Freedom of Movement act, allowing 6 months for job hunting.

Would it be possible for my wife to relocate at the same time as me and search for a position, or would she have to wait until after I found gainful employment before joining me?

If so, would there be any interim solutions - for example her coming on a tourist visa while I search for a job?

I appreciate any insight you may have.

Regards,

James

Hi every one, is a work permit needed for someone/a student (non EU/non US) who wishes to have a regular babysitting job (ie a few hours every day)?
And from the other perspective: what risks is a person (non-swiss/EU national) who employs a babysitter with no working permit exposed to?

Does anyone know the city of Giessen in Germany (just north of Frankfurt)? Is it a nice place to live? I see it has a big student population but am concerned it also has a lot of problem neighbourhoods and a high crime rate.

Hi all,

OH got his C permit in August, which means he won't be taxed at source anymore. His employer got all the necessary documents.

Does he have to warn the taxes himself and ask for a tax form, or will it come automatically? We havent heard anything so far.

Thanks!

Hello All,

My parents are flying into Frankfurt and taking a train to Zurich. Since they have quite some bags, the plan is to take a taxi to the train station and get into the train.

Question: Could some of you throw some light as to the availability of Luggage Trolleys in the station? if yes, would they be close to the taxi stand?

Thank you for the responses in advance.

Places to look for casual backpacks in Lausanne ?

Hi everyone,

Looking for not a camping gear outlet, but more of a handbag place that carries something like this or this.

I can only think of Manor or Bon Genie (*cringe*) and then just going shop by shop in the centre and seeing what they've got.

Can anyone think of any specific places? There must be some, right?

Thanks

Importation costs on heavy cooker

I've read some old threads but still struggling to get a clear idea of what it will cost me to import a reconditioned Aga into Switzerland

For the TVA my understanding is that I need to get the UK supplier to sell without the UK 20% VAT and then I would need to pay the Swiss 8% TVA upon importation, is this correct ?

The customs duty is however less clear. Looking at the Swiss Federal dept of Finances website is says (if I understood correctly) that the customs duty will be calculated based on weight, now I'm no genius but this sounds expensive for a 400kg cooker.....

Can anyone shed any light on this, did I misunderstand something ?

Looking for a Cat Sitter in the Zurich area

We live in Oberenstringen - just north of the city limits of Zurich (past Hongg).

We recently got 2 kittens who are now 4 months old.

We will be on holiday for the first 2 weeks of November and for a week at Christmas.

Can anyone recommend a pet sitter in the area? Or do you have pets and would want to do a "pet-sitting swap" where we'd watch your pets next time you're away?

We're looking for someone who could come to the apartment once a day to feed the cats, scoop the litter box, and play with them a little bit.

Thanks!
